1996: Trent Lott becomes Senate Majority Leader after Republicans take control of Senate

Lott occupied this post off and on due to shifting majorities in the Senate.  He later resigned due to controversial remarks he made regarding Strom Thurmond’s run for president.

1996: Thad Cochran named Conservationist of the Year by North American Waterfowl Federation

Cochran also received a lifetime achievement award from the Nature Conservancy.
