The window unit quickly gained popularity in Mississippi; by 1960 16% of the state’s households had air conditioning, and the number had grown to 47.5% by 1970, and 69.9% by 1980.
1951: City of Natchez passes Historic Preservation Ordinance
Natchez became the third city in the nation, and the first in Mississippi, to pass an ordinance intended to protect the city’s historic buildings.
