March 31, 1933: Civilian Conservation Corps created through executive order by FDR

The CCC was a relief program that put 250,000-502,000 men to work doing forestry, soil erosion, and flood control projects. There were 102 CCC camps in Mississippi.

May 2, 1933: Jimmie Rodgers makes final recordings in New York City
Due to his rapidly deteriorating health, Rodgers had to rest on a cot in the studio between takes. He died on May 26 at the Taft Hotel in New York.
May 12, 1933: FDR signs Agricultural Adjustment Act
This legislation created the Agricultural Adjustment Administration, which sought to reward farmers for growing fewer crops. The idea was that with less produce in the market, crop prices would rise, benefiting the farmer.
May 18, 1933: Tennessee Valley Authority Act signed
The act was intended to alleviate the plight of farmers and the poor through the development of federally owned and distributed power, as well as to promote flood control.
August 1933: Ellen Woodward becomes federal director of work relief for women

Born in Oxford, Mississippi, Woodward became the third woman to serve in the Mississippi Legislature before moving to Washington, D.C. to work in the Roosevelt administration.
December 5, 1933: U.S. Congress passes 21st Amendment repealing national prohibition
Each state still had to decide whether to legalize alcohol.
