1932: Office of Supervisor of Oil and Gas Conservation established

Assisted by a three-man Oil and Gas Board, the office issued drilling permits and adopted regulations for the oil business in the state.

May 1, 1932: State sales tax of 2% goes into effect on retail goods

When Governor Conner took office, Mississippi had a roughly $13 million deficit. Conner proposed a sales tax to replenish the state treasury, and by the time he left office in 1936 there was a surplus of more than $3 million.
