1931: Marie Hull painting selected for Paris exhibition

Hull’s painting, Church at Penne, France was selected for the Spring Salon in Paris, the only international juried exhibition open at that time.

1931: Lucy Somerville Howorth elected to Mississippi House of Representatives

Howorth’s mother, Nellie Nugent Somerville, was the first woman elected to the legislature. President Roosevelt later appointed Howorth to the Board of Appeals of the Veterans Administration in 1934.
