1912: Legislature strengthens child labor law

New law prohibited girls under fourteen and boys under twelve from working in industrial establishments.  An eight-hour work day was established for older youths.

September 1912: Mississippi Normal School founded in Hattiesburg

Now the University of Southern Mississippi, the school was founded to train teachers. Initially, an 18-member faculty taught 220 students.
