1875: U. S. Congress ratifies Civil Rights Act of 1875

This act guaranteed equal use of public accommodations and public spaces and forbade exclusion of African Americans from juries.

The Mississippi Plan was devised by Mississippi Democrats to overthrow Republican rule through intimidation, violence, and paramilitary groups. Disturbances occurred throughout the state as Democrats won state elections in the “Counterrevolution of 1875.”
