White citizens organized to oppose the policies and actions of the state’s Reconstruction government. When federal authorities refused requests from state officials to send army troops to the town, the threatened riot broke out. Thirty-one people were killed.

In 1879, Bruce became the first African American to preside over the Senate. He was appointed by President James Garfield as the Register of the Treasury in 1881.
