The War with Mexico began after Mexico refused to acknowledge Texas’s rebellion and later annexation by the United States. At the same time the United States sought to expand its borders to California diplomatically.

Schools were funded by a special tax to be levied by the county boards of police.

September 1846: First Regiment Mississippi Infantry joins Battle of Monterrey

Under command of Colonel Jefferson Davis, the 1st Infantry helped General Zachary Taylor win the battle.
