Methodists were the first to organize and build a church in Jackson.  Their congregation built several edifices on the same site over the years. Galloway United Methodist Church stands there today.

February 1839: Legislature passes Mississippi Women’s Property Act of 1839

The law protected the property rights of women.

June 1839: Major fire destroys much of Port Gibson

December 1839: Yazoo City fire destroys half of city
