1837: Panic of 1837 causes economic depression

1837: Union Bank of Mississippi established

In an attempt to assist the new bank and improve the Mississippi’s economy, the legislature authorized the sale of $5 million in bonds. Unfortunately, this debt would ultimately lead the state to “repudiate” its payment obligations to its debtors in 1842 and damage the state’s fiscal reputation for years.

1837: Chickasaw removal begins

The Chickasaws were moved to an area in what is present-day southeastern Oklahoma, and their lands were thrown open to new settlement.
