1836: Eastern Clarion goes into publication in Jasper County
The paper later moved to Meridian and then Jackson after the Civil War. It is now the Clarion Ledger, the most widely circulated paper in the state.
January 1836: Sixteen counties added
Bolivar, Coahoma, DeSoto, Itawamba, Lafayette, Marshall, Newton, Panola, Pontotoc, Tippah, Tishomingo and Tunica Counties created.
