1836: First steam engine in state arrives at Natchez by steamboat

The introduction of the railroad eventually brought an end to the steamboat era.

1836: Eastern Clarion goes into publication in Jasper County

The paper later moved to Meridian and then Jackson after the Civil War. It is now the Clarion Ledger, the most widely circulated paper in the state.

January 1836: Sixteen counties added
