1824: Simpson County is created

December 1824: Choctaw Chief Pushmataha dies in Washington, D.C.

Pushmataha had fought against the Red Stick Creeks in the Creek War, leading Andrew Jackson to call him the bravest Indian he had ever known. He had traveled to the nation’s capital to lobby officials for better treaty terms. Pushmataha was buried there with full military honors.
