The concrete bridge allowed cars more access to U.S. Highway 90.  A 22-foot stretch of paved highway opened from Gulfport to Biloxi.

One of the worst natural disasters in American history, the Mississippi River flooded 27,000 square miles in 170 counties across 7 states.  The flood displaced 700,000 people and killed hundreds more.
