1869: Tougaloo University founded near Jackson by American Missionary Association (AMA)

The Freedmen’s Bureau donated $10,500 to purchase land for the school.  The name was changed to Tougaloo College in 1916.

1869: Canton Citizen, African American newspaper, founded

This newspaper was short lived, as were many of the African American newspapers established in the 1870s.  Copies of these early papers have not been found.
